On April 22-24, I went to Itoigawa, Niigata Prefecture, on a press tour that was organized by Niigata Prefectural Tourist Association. We started out the second day with the Fossa Magna Museum -- a geological museum that tells a story of Itoigawa's natural history, from jade and limestone to the Fossa Magna, which I briefly explained in my previous entry. This museum was actually one of the places I, the ex-Geology major, was looking forward to the most on this trip.

The museum first opened in April 1994. It was completely renovated and re-opened in March 2015, to coincide with the extension of Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture. With six big galleries and many interesting things to see, an hour just wasn't enough here!

What exactly is a Geopark?

Near the entrance of the museum, we saw a huge jade stone. Takigawa-san of Itoigawa Sightseeing Association explained that green is not the only color of jade -- this one is cobalt blue, for instance. The color, he said, is influenced by minerals, and the blue jade contains a large amount of titanium.

We stepped into the first gallery named "Fascinating Jade" and saw numerous jade specimens collected in Itoigawa.

One of the most expensive and valuable kinds of jade -- deep green.

The cobalt one made me feel at ease.

This one was my favorite, since I love the lavender color. I hate how the lights on the ceiling are reflected off of the stone...

Why is the jade found in Itoigawa?

I guess the question now is, why exactly is the jade found in Itoigawa?

It is said that the jade formed about 500 million years ago, deep within the earth where an ocean plate was submerging under a continent plate. Jade eventually became apart of serpentinite -- a metamorphic rock that forms at tectonic plate boundaries -- and was carried toward the surface of the earth by plate tectonics and volcano activity over along period of time. Itoigawa happens to be a place where jade makes its appearance.

Jade was chosen as Japan's national stone last year. What's funny is that until about 80 years ago, it was believed that the jade found in Japan was originally brought in from outside. That notion all changed when Gyofu Soma, a poet and lyricist who lived from the late 1800s to mid-1900s, noticed that Nunakawa Hime, or Princess Nunakawa -- who is said to have ruled this region in ancient times -- is wearing a jade necklace. He concluded that perhaps jade exists in this area and shared his thoughts with his acquaintance. The acquaintance then told his relative about it, and the relative set out to look for jade in nearby rivers -- and came across a green stone. A university professor later confirmed that it is, in fact, a jade gemstone. The time was 1939.

The first jade was found in the Kotakigawa Jade Gorge, a very serene and peaceful place. I could only hear the sound of nature.

The gorge has been designated a National Natural Monument since 1956, so hunting for jade here is strictly prohibited. If that's what you want to do, you should head to one of Itoigawa's many beaches -- especially the one named "Hisui Kaigan (Jade Coast)." But why are jade gemstones found along the coast? That is because the jade leaves the gorge and flows down the Himegawa River, eventually reaching the ocean and getting washed ashore.

By the way, you can bring the stones and pebbles you found along the coast to the Fossa Magna Museum and have them checked/appraised by experts. It's all free of charge too!

It's a really popular service offered by the museum (why wouldn't it be?), so visitors come from all over Japan to have their finds evaluated. When I was there, one person said he came from Saitama Prefecture, while another one said he came all the way from Hiroshima. They both said they looked for jade along the coast since early morning.

And here's an example of how the results look like.

According to the museum, people line up to have their stones checked during weekends and holidays, so it's best to avoid coming at those times. Also, all the stones should be washed to remove any sand and dried before they're brought in.

How to find jade

The jade is hard to come by, but if you remember the following, you'll have greater chances of finding one.

Look for whitish stones
Look for heavy stones
Look for angular stones, not round ones
Look for stones that shine
Look for stones that have smooth surface
Look, look and look. Don't give up easily!

I couldn't find time to do jade hunting during this press tour, but I'd like to give it a try sometime. Like I said, there just wasn't enough time -- not only at Fossa Magna Museum, but Itoigawa as a whole. It's a place I'd like to stay for at least a week, to take in various things the city and its surroundings have to offer.
