I visited the southwestern part of the States from April 5 to 13. We flew from Haneda to Los Angeles, then rented a car and drove through Palm Springs, Sedona, Grand Canyon and Monument Valley, and returned to LA via Route 66.

Ever since I graduated college nine years ago, I've been meaning to go back to the States on holiday but never had a chance to. So, when I heard some of my writer friends are planning a trip to the States, I decided to join in right away.

The budget for the trip was 150,000 yen, including airfare, hotel and car rental fees. I actually was very surprised when I first heard this, because I didn't think a 9-day road trip across the southwestern part of the States was possible with such a low budget! But thanks to my friend, a professional traveler, who put together the travel itinerary, things went well throughout the trip.

Without further ado, I'll begin my travelogue!

(Flying on Delta Air Lines from Haneda to Los Angeles)

We used Delta Air Lines for our trip. I used to fly Delta all the time when I was a student at UCLA, looking for cheap tickets to go back to my parents' house (they were living in Bangkok, Thailand, at the time) during holidays. Back then, all the planes landed in Narita, but nowadays there are flights arriving in /leaving from Haneda -- really convenient for people living in Tokyo!
* From Tokyo Station, it takes at least an hour to get to Narita Airport.

Delta Air Lines gate. This was my first time at Haneda Airport International Terminal (if I remember right...), but it was clean everywhere.

We were told it will be approx. 9 hours from Haneda to Los Angeles. I never left Japan for the past five years, so this was my first long flight in quite some time. I decided to start watching "La La Land" right after the takeoff, to build up excitement for the trip that just started.

Snacks that were handed out about an hour about the takeoff. These (especially the pretzel on the right) brought back so many memories, I couldn't eat them right away (I wasn't that hungry either) -- so I decided to take them home. I'm actually eating the pretzel as I write this blog entry!

And then came dinner. It was around 5 p.m. Japan time, so I normally wouldn't be hungry. Tis the mystery of the long flight, however, and I ordered beef stroganoff, hoping to eat something filling. It was good! I liked how it came with lots of vegetables.

I finished watching "La La Land," then fell asleep. I woke up in about two hours and put on another film that's been calling out to me to watch -- "Me Before You." As I got to its climax scene, I glanced out the window and saw land underneath. It was hazy, just like how it usually is during the early morning hours in southern California.

Enjoying breakfast in the soft morning light. It was a hot egg and cheese wrap, some fresh fruit and yogurt. The coffee was Starbucks.

(It takes time to get out from LAX...)

We arrived at LAX about half an hour early, but since the gate was still closed, we were stuck on a runway. I didn't mind it though, because I was thrilled to see some airplanes that don't come all the way to Japan -- such as this American Eagle one. By the time we got to the gate and disembarked the plane, more than half an hour had passed.

It took us an additional three hours to finally step out of the airport, because the whole ESTA thing was new to me and the machine refused to read my fingerprints for quite some time. And the baggage pickup area was just a mess. But I kinda saw this coming, knowing LAX...

While walking toward the pick up area for the Hertz shuttle bus, I saw a SuperShuttle. I used to take this all the time right after final exams (meaning, I've pretty much pulled an all-nighter the night before and I had zero makeup on), to catch my flight back to my parents' home in Bangkok. Oh, so much memories!

We rented a car at Hertz, and off we go to Palm Springs! I'll tell all about it in my next blog entry.
